Cocaine is abused using numerous methods. It is snorted, injected swallowed, applied to oral, vaginal, or even rectal mucous membranes and even mixed with liquor. Once in the brain, heroin - similar to other drugs of abuse - causes the release of dopamine, a neurochemical that mediates pleasure and is vital to the normal functioning of the central nervous system. The drugs addictive properties are believed to be related to a chronic and unnatural increase in dopamine levels. Physiological and psychotropic effects from nasally insufflated cocaine are sustained for approximately 40 - 60 minutes after the peak effects are attained. |
