Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
One of the most important things that should be confronted in addiction recovery treatment addressing is the often misguided beliefs that an individual may hold onto about self, others and their environment.
Among people who needed but did not receive illegal drug use treatment and felt they needed treatment (based on 2004-2005 combined data), the six most often reported reasons for not receiving treatment were (a) cost or insurance barriers (36.7 percent), (b) not ready to stop using (34.7 percent), (c) stigma (24.4 percent), (d) did not feel the need for treatment at the time or could handle the problem without treatment (16.3 percent), (e) did not know where to go for treatment (16.3 percent), and (f) other access barriers (16.1 percent).
Alabama had the lowest rate of current use of marijuana among persons aged 12 or older. Six other Southern States were in the lowest fifth for marijuana use among persons aged 12 or older: Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia. Iowa, New Jersey, and Utah were the other States in the lowest fifth.
Heroin is produced from morphine, which is a principal component of opium.
The percentages of teens reporting binge alcohol use and use of cigarettes and marijuana in the past month were lower among those who perceived great risk in using these substances than among those who did not perceive great risk. For example, 5.2 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 in 2005 who perceived great risk from "having 5 or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week" reported binge drinking in the past month (consumption of five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage on a single occasion on at least 1 day in the past 30 days); by contrast, past month binge drinking was reported by 13.0 percent of teens who saw moderate, slight, or no risk from having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. Past month marijuana use was reported by 1.5 percent of teens who saw great risk in smoking marijuana once a month compared with 9.7 percent of teens who saw moderate, slight, or no risk.
Rates of substance dependence or abuse were associated with age. In 2008, the rate of substance dependence or abuse among adults aged 18 to 25 (20.8 percent) was higher than that among teens aged 12 to 17 (7.6 percent) and among adults aged 26 or older (7.0 percent). None of these rates changed significantly between 2007 and 2008. For teens aged 12 to 17, the rate decreased from 8.9 percent in 2002 to 7.6 percent in 2008. For young adults aged 18 to 25 and adults aged 26 or older, these rates remained stable from 2002 to 2008.
