Counseling in terms of drug rehab works by first helping the addict to recognize that they have a substance abuse problem to help them to target the irrational thinking that coincides with drug addiction. Next, the individual should be encouraged to achieve and maintain abstinence from drugs and alcohol use, through mastering the tools that they will need to use daily to maintain their long term sobriety.
Among persons aged 12 or older, the overall rate of past month marijuana use in 2006 (6.0 percent) was the same as in 2005 and was similar to the rates in earlier years going back to 2002.
Between 2002 and 2008, there was no change in the number of persons with substance dependence or abuse (22.0 million in 2002 and 22.2 million in 2008).
The rates for past month and past year methamphetamine use did not change between 2004 and 2005, but the lifetime rate declined from 4.9 to 4.3 percent. From 2002 to 2005, decreases were seen in lifetime (5.3 to 4.3 percent) and past year (0.7 to 0.5 percent) use, but not past month use (0.3 percent in 2002 vs. 0.2 percent in 2005). Although the number of past month users has remained steady since 2002, the number of methamphetamine users who were dependent on or abused some illegal drug did rise significantly during this period, from 164,000 in 2002 to 257,000 in 2005 .
Among teens aged 12 to 17, the current illegal drug use rate remained stable from 2007 (9.5 percent) to 2008 (9.3 percent). Between 2002 and 2008, youth rates declined significantly for illegal drugs in general (from 11.6 to 9.3 percent) and for marijuana (8.2 to 6.7 percent), cocaine (0.6 to 0.4 percent), prescription-type drugs used nonmedically (4.0 to 2.9 percent), pain relievers (3.2 to 2.3 percent), stimulants (0.8 to 0.5 percent), and methamphetamine (0.3 to 0.1 percent).
There was a significant decrease in current use of crack among persons aged 18 to 22 who were not full time college students, from 0.6 percent in 2005 to 0.2 percent in 2006. The rate was unchanged among full time college students (0.1 percent in both 2005 and 2006).
