Of the 1.2 million persons who felt they needed treatment, 441,000 (35.8 percent) reported that they made an effort but were unable to get treatment, and 792,000 (64.2 percent) reported making no effort to get treatment.
There have been numerous reports by law enforcement concerning women reporting that an individual slipped GHB into their drink and that they believe that they have been sexually violated; GHB cases are the hardest ones to prosecute because these victims have very little memory of what actually took place after they unknowingly ingested the substance.
The rate of alcohol or illegal drug treatment among persons aged 12 or older in 2001 was higher in metropolitan areas (1.5 percent) than in nonmetropolitan areas (1.0 percent).
In 2006, an estimated 72.9 million Americans aged 12 or older were current (past month) users of a tobacco product. This represents 29.6 percent of the population in that age range. In addition, 61.6 million persons (25.0 percent of the population) were current cigarette smokers; 13.7 million (5.6 percent) smoked cigars; 8.2 million (3.3 percent) used smokeless tobacco; and 2.3 million (0.9 percent) smoked tobacco in pipes.

Among adults aged 50 to 59, the rate of current illegal drug use increased between 2002 and 2005, then remained unchanged in 2006. For those aged 50 to 54, the rate increased from 3.4 in 2002 to 6.0 percent in 2006. Among those aged 55 to 59, current illegal drug use showed a mixed trend with no significant difference between the rates in 2002 and 2006. These patterns and trends may partially reflect the aging into these age groups of the baby boom cohort, whose lifetime rates of illegal drug use are higher than those of older cohorts.
