Among the 18.0 million people who needed but did not receive treatment for an alcohol use problem in 2006, there were 541,000 (3.0 percent) who felt they needed treatment for their alcohol use problem. Of these, 220,000 (40.6 percent) made an effort but were unable to get treatment, and 321,000 (59.4 percent) did not make an effort to get treatment.

Many new, younger users begin by snorting or smoking heroin because they wish to avoid the social stigma attached to injection drug use.

In 2008, adults aged 18 or older with past year MDE had higher rates of past year illegal drug use than those without MDE (27.2 vs. 13.0 percent). A similar pattern was observed for specific types of past year illegal drug use, such as the use of marijuana, cocaine, heroin, or hallucinogens and the nonmedical use of prescription-type psychotherapeutics.

Opiates affect the spinal cord, which transmits sensations from the body. Opiates act here to decrease feelings of pain, even following serious injuries.

Most (59.1 percent) of the 2.1 million recent marijuana initiates were younger than age 18 when they first used. Among teens aged 12 to 17, an estimated 4.5 percent had used marijuana for the first time within the past year, which was lower than the rate in 2004 (5.0 percent), but this difference was not statistically significant.

"Smoking" methamphetamine actually refers to vaporizing it to produce fumes, rather than burning and inhaling the resulting smoke, as with tobacco. It is commonly smoked in glass pipes made from blown Pyrex tubes, light bulbs, or on aluminum foil heated by a flame underneath. This method is also known as "chasing the white dragon".
