The occurrence of MDE in the past year among teens aged 12 to 17 was associated with a higher prevalence of illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse (18.8 percent). Among teens who did not report past year MDE, 7.1 percent had illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse during the same period.

In 2004, 19.9 percent of unemployed adults aged 18 or older were classified with dependence or abuse, while 10.5 percent of full-time employed adults and 11.9 percent of part-time employed adults were classified as such. However, most adults with substance dependence or abuse were employed either full or part time. Of the 20.3 million adults classified with dependence or abuse, 15.7 million (77.6 percent) were employed.

Often, an individual will begin taking Dilaudid for a legitimate ailment, go to their doctor and receive a prescription for the potent drug. As time passes they build a tolerance to the drug and have to take more and more; they then become dependent on the Dilaudid, even when they no longer need it for pain. This dependency is often what leads many down the treacherous path to Dilaudid addiction.

In 2000 law enforcement authorities in Maine dismantled a drug ring accused of obtaining OxyContin by forging prescriptions, having them filled at pharmacies in southern Maine and New Hampshire, and covering the costs with their Medicaid cards.

In 2008, an estimated 8.3 million adults (3.7 percent) aged 18 or older had serious thoughts of suicide in the past year. The rate was 3.9 percent among women and 3.4 percent among men. Rates of serious thoughts of suicide were highest among young adults aged 18 to 25 (6.7 percent) compared with adults aged 26 to 49 (3.9 percent) and adults aged 50 or older (2.3 percent).

Use of illegal drugs and alcohol was more common among current cigarette smokers than among nonsmokers in 2005, as in 2002 through 2004. Among persons aged 12 or older, 20.2 percent of past month cigarette smokers reported current use of an illegal drug compared with 4.1 percent of persons who were not current cigarette smokers. Past month alcohol use was reported by 67.6 percent of current cigarette smokers compared with 46.6 percent of those who did not use cigarettes in the past month. The association also was found with binge drinking (43.8 percent of current cigarette users vs. 15.7 percent of current nonusers) and heavy drinking (16.1 vs. 3.5 percent, respectively).
