Illegal drugs other than marijuana include cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, and the nonmedical use of prescription-type pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives. A number of States (six) that fell into the top fifth for past month use of an illegal drug among those aged 12 or older also were ranked in the top fifth for current use of an illegal drug other than marijuana: Alaska, District of Columbia, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington. The other States in the top fifth (Arizona, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Oklahoma) reported rates of current use of an illegal drug that were lower and rates of past month marijuana use that fell into the middle or next-to-lowest fifth.

In 2002.2003, New Mexico had the highest percentage of persons aged 12 or older needing but not receiving treatment for an illegal drug use problem (3.5 percent). The States in the top fifth for needing but not receiving treatment for an illegal drug use problem were mainly in the West (five States) or in the Northeast (four States). California had the largest total number of persons aged 12 or older needing but not receiving treatment for an illegal drug use problem, approximately 798,000.

Among people aged 12 or older, the rate of past month alcohol use in large metropolitan areas (53.5 percent) was higher than the 49.6 percent in small metropolitan areas and 45.0 percent in nonmetropolitan areas. Binge drinking was equally prevalent in small metropolitan areas (22.6 percent), large metropolitan areas (23.4 percent), and nonmetropolitan areas (22.2 percent). The rate of heavy alcohol use in large metropolitan areas increased from 6.1 percent in 2005 to 6.7 percent in 2006. Heavy alcohol use and illegal drug abuse has been reported to be highest among construction and food service workers. Also, surveys have indicated that auto mechanics, laborers, and light-truck drivers are among several populations that are much more susceptible to alcohol abuse.

Current illegal drug use rates remained stable from 2005 to 2006 among teens aged 12 to 17. However, rates of current use declined significantly from 2002 to 2006 for any illegal drug and several specific drugs (including marijuana, hallucinogens, LSD, Ecstasy, prescription type drugs used nonmedically, pain relievers, tranquilizers, and the use of illegal drugs other than marijuana). For any illegal drug use, the rates were 11.6 percent in 2002, 11.2 percent in 2003, 10.6 percent in 2004, 9.9 percent in 2005, and 9.8 percent in 2006.
