Female teens were more likely than male teens to report using outpatient specialty mental health services (13.6 vs. 9.3 percent), education services (13.0 vs. 10.5 percent), or general medical-based services (3.2 vs. 2.6 percent), but there was no significant gender difference in the use of inpatient specialty mental health services.
Psychotherapeutics include the nonmedical use of any prescription-type pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, or sedatives. Over-the-counter substances are not included. In 2008, there were 2.5 million persons aged 12 or older who used psychotherapeutics nonmedically for the first time within the past year, which averages out to around 7,000 initiates per day. This annual estimate of the initiates of psychotherapeutics was significantly lower than the 2004 estimate (2.8 million). In 2008, the numbers of new users of specific classes of psychotherapeutics were 2.2 million for pain relievers, 1.1 million for tranquilizers, 599,000 for stimulants, and 181,000 for sedatives. The rate of current illegal drug use among the population aged 12 or older in completely rural counties in 2006 (7.8 percent) was similar to that observed in 2002 (6.7 percent) and 2005 (5.1 percent) but higher than the rate in 2003 (3.1 percent) and 2004 (4.6 percent).
Rates of substance dependence or abuse were associated with current employment status in 2006. A higher percentage of unemployed adults aged 18 or older were classified with dependence or abuse (19.5 percent) than were full-time employed adults (10.4 percent) or part-time employed adults (10.2 percent).
Among pregnant women aged 15 to 44, combined data for 2004 and 2005 indicated that the rate of past month cigarette use was 16.6 percent. The rate was higher among women in that age group who were not pregnant (29.6 percent).
Illegal drug use in 2006 varied by educational status. Among adults aged 18 or older, the rate of current illegal drug use was lower for college graduates (5.9 percent) than for those who did not graduate from high school (9.2 percent), high school graduates (8.6 percent), and those with some college (9.1 percent). However, adults who had graduated from college were more likely to have tried illegal drugs in their lifetime when compared with adults who had not completed high school (50.1 vs. 37.2 percent). Among college graduates, the rate of current illegal drug use increased from 5.0 percent in 2005 to 5.9 percent in 2006.
