Opiates can be taken by mouth, smoked, or snorted, although addicts often prefer intravenous injection, which gives the strongest, quickest pleasure.

The pattern of higher rates of current alcohol use, binge alcohol use, and heavy alcohol use among full-time college students compared with rates for others aged 18 to 22 has remained consistent since 2002.

The percentage of teens aged 12 to 17 indicating that smoking marijuana once a month was a great risk increased from 32.4 percent in 2002 to 34.9 percent in 2003, but did not change between 2003 and 2004 (35.0 percent). There were declines between 2003 and 2004 in the percentages of teens perceiving a great risk in using cocaine and heroin. Perceived risk of cigarette use increased between 2003 and 2004, but there was no change in the perceived risk of having four or five drinks of alcohol nearly every day or having five or more drinks once or twice a week.

Heroin abusers often use other drugs in conjunction with heroin. They may "speedball," taking cocaine or methamphetamine with heroin, or use alcohol, marijuana, or tranquilizers to enhance the high and blunt effects of withdrawal.

The number of persons aged 12 or older initiating use of smokeless tobacco in the past year was higher in 2005 (1.1 million) than in 2002 (951,000) and 2003 (928,000), but it was similar to the number in 2004 (999,000). Three quarters (74.6 percent) of new initiates in 2005 were male, and more than half (53.9 percent) were under age 18 when they first used.

There were no changes between 2000 and 2001 in rates of past month use for any of the illegal drug categories for teens aged 14 or 15.
