The rate of treatment for mental health problems among teens aged 12 to 17 who used illegal drugs in the past year (32.0 percent) was higher than the rate among teens who did not use illegal drugs (19.3 percent).
The number of persons who smoked cigarettes for the first time within the past 12 months was 2.1 million in 2004, not significantly different from the estimates in 2002 (1.9 million) or 2003 (2.0 million). About two thirds of new smokers in 2004 were under the age of 18 when they first smoked cigarettes (67.8 percent).
Use of Lortab crosses over to addiction when the user no longer has control over their use of the drug and when they continue to use the drug despite negative consequences.
The occurrence of MDE in the past year among teens aged 12 to 17 was associated with a higher prevalence of illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse (18.8 percent). Among teens who did not report past year MDE, 7.1 percent had illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse during the same period.
In the 18 to 25 age group, the rate of past month use of these drugs was highest in Rhode Island (13.4 percent); among teens, the rate was highest in Arizona (7.2 percent). Only Colorado and Kentucky were in the top fifth in all three age groups and for all persons aged 12 or older.
Although preventing prescription drug abuse is an important part of patient care, doctors should not avoid prescribing or administering stimulants, CNS depressants, or opioid pain relievers in cases where these medications are needed.
