Illegal drug use in 2005 was associated with educational status. Among adults aged 18 or older, the rate of current illegal drug use was lower among college graduates (5.0 percent) compared with those who did not graduate from high school (9.8 percent), high school graduates (8.6 percent), and those with some college (8.9 percent). However, adults who had graduated from college were more likely to have tried illegal drugs in their lifetime when compared with adults who had not completed high school (51.7 vs. 37.7 percent).
In 2002.2003, New Mexico had the highest percentage of persons aged 12 or older needing but not receiving treatment for an illegal drug use problem (3.5 percent). The States in the top fifth for needing but not receiving treatment for an illegal drug use problem were mainly in the West (five States) or in the Northeast (four States). California had the largest total number of persons aged 12 or older needing but not receiving treatment for an illegal drug use problem, approximately 798,000.
In order to be highly effective, especially in regard to at-risk or hard-to reach populations, drug and alcohol treatment programs should provide a combination of culturally competent therapies and various other services.
Among the 5.7 million adults who reported an unmet need for treatment or counseling for mental health problems and did not receive treatment in the past year, several barriers to treatment were reported. These included cost or insurance issues (46.8 percent), not feeling a need for treatment at the time or believing that the problem could be handled without treatment (36.7 percent), stigma associated with treatment (23.4 percent), and not knowing where to go for services (18.5 percent)
Young adults aged 18 to 22 enrolled full time in college were more likely than their peers not enrolled full time (i.e., part time college students and persons not currently enrolled in college) to use alcohol in the past month, binge drink, and drink heavily. Among full time college students in 2008, 61.0 percent were current drinkers, 40.5 percent binge drank, and 16.3 percent were heavy drinkers. Among those not enrolled full time in college, these rates were 54.2, 38.1, and 13.0 percent, respectively. Rates of current alcohol use and binge use for full time college students decreased from 2007, when they were 63.7 and 43.6 percent, respectively.
