Past month heavy alcohol use also was associated with MDE in the past year in 2006. In 2006, an estimated 20.4 million Americans aged 12 or older were current (past month) illegal drug users, meaning they had used an illegal drug during the month prior to the survey interview. This estimate represents 8.3 percent of the population aged 12 years old or older.
