There were no changes between 2002 and 2005 in the percentages of persons with dependence on or abuse of illegal drugs (3.0 percent in 2002, 2.9 percent in 2003, 3.0 percent in 2004, and 2.8 percent in 2005) and dependence on or abuse of alcohol (7.7 percent in 2002, 7.5 percent in 2003, 7.8 percent in 2004, and 7.7 percent in 2005). However, there was a decrease in the rate of dependence on or abuse of marijuana from 2004 to 2005 (1.9 to 1.7 percent).
Sudden Sniffing Death Syndrome is fatal and has been known to occur to first time inhalant users.
There are many obvious signs when an individual is abusing inhalants; they can include chemical odors, hidden empty spray cans, intoxication, slurred speech and a lack of coordination.
In 2005, current cigarette smoking among teens aged 12 to 17 and young adults aged 18 to 25 was more prevalent among whites than blacks (12.8 vs. 6.5 percent for 12 to 17 year olds and 44.2 vs. 28.7 percent for 18 to 25 year olds).
