Heroin available in the U.S. is produced in four distinct geographical areas: South America (Colombia), Southeast Asia (primarily Burma), Mexico, and Southwest Asia (principally Afghanistan).

A large number of deaths that are related to inhalant abuse are related to repetitive inhalation, which can lead to extremely high concentrations of inhaled fumes which displaces the available oxygen in the lungs.

It is recommended that people addicted to opiates seek professional opiate detox to help them through the potentially dangerous withdrawal process.

Among teens, the past year prevalence of MDE ranged from 4.3 percent among 12 year olds to 11.2 percent among those aged 16 and 11.9 percent among those aged 17.

Marijuana was the most commonly used illegal drug (15.2 million past month users). Among persons aged 12 or older, the rate of past month marijuana use in 2008 (6.1 percent) was similar to the rate in 2007 (5.8 percent).

Heroin withdrawal begins as early as a few hours after the drug was last used. The body needs time to recover, and heroin withdrawal symptoms result. Heroin withdrawal can occur whenever any chronic use is discontinued or reduced. Users also experience severe craving for the drug during withdrawal, precipitating continued abuse and/or relapse. Major withdrawal symptoms peak between 48 and 72 hours after the last dose and typically subside after about a week; however, some individuals may show persistent withdrawal symptoms for months. Some people experience heroin withdrawal during hospitalization for health conditions other than their addiction. There are a few people in these circumstances that do not even realize they are experiencing withdrawal and think they just have the flu.
