Among the 4.7 million adults on probation at some time in the past year, 29.2 percent reported current illegal drug use in 2005. This is higher than the rate of 7.4 percent among adults not on probation in 2005.
In 2008, 11.1 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that they had participated in substance use prevention programs outside of school within the past year. This was lower than the percentage reported in 2002 (12.7 percent). Almost four fifths (78.0 percent) reported having seen or heard drug or alcohol prevention messages from sources outside of school, lower than in 2002 when the percentage was 83.2 percent. The percentage of school-enrolled teens reporting that they had seen or heard prevention messages at school also declined during this period, from 78.8 to 75.9 percent.
Regular use of amphetamines induces tolerance to some effects, which means that more and more of the drug is required to produce the desired effects.
In 2005, probation status was associated with substance dependence or abuse. The rate of substance dependence or abuse was 37.2 percent among adults who were on probation during the past year, which is significantly higher than the rate among adults who were not on probation during the past year (8.7 percent).
