History
The area known as Fayetteville was originally inhabited by the Osage Indians. The Cherokee Treaty which was established in 1828 made the land in the region available to settlers. The town was the location of numerous battles during the Civil War including a battle at Pea Ridge and a battle at Prairie Grove. The city was established in 1836 and was a prominent transportation center due to being situated between eastern cities and the undeveloped West.
The town was given its name in the 1800's by a small number of families settling in the region. They named it after their former home of Fayetteville, Tennessee. The early pioneers who established the area were situated approximately 30 miles away from the newly created Indian Territory. The deported Indian people from the East were placed there. The town was known for providing supplies and a place to rest for people migrating to the West. The economy significantly improved with the arrival of the railroad.
