Did You Know? ...
Interesting Facts and Statistics:

One of the most important facts about heroin is that using this drug inevitably leads to drug addiction. Heroin addiction is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, and by neurochemical and molecular changes in the user's brain. Heroin also produces profound degrees of tolerance and physical dependence, which are also powerful motivating factors for compulsive use and abuse.

The parts of the brain that are affected by marijuana influence pleasure, memory, thinking, concentrating, sensory and time perception, and coordinated movement.

A NIDA study found that Life Skills Training (LST), a thoroughly tested, school-based, universal prevention program, significantly reduced drug use among minority middle school students that were failing academically and who had friends who drank or used drugs. Previous research has directly linked academic and social factors to an increased risk of substance abuse. One year after the LST program, these same number of high-risk teens reported lower rates of cigarette, alcohol, and inhalant use than a comparable group of nonparticipating students.

As the morphine withdrawal syndrome progresses, an individual may experience the following: blood pressure is elevated, chills with goose bumps alternating with hot flashes, kicking movements of the legs and excessive sweating Severe pains in the bones and muscles of the back and extremities occur, as do muscle spasms, are also some of the common characteristics of morphine withdrawal.

In most cases, a person whose only crime is marijuana possession does not go to prison.

In 2005, an estimated 2.9 million persons aged 12 or older used an illegal drug for the first time within the past 12 months; this averages to nearly 8,000 initiates per day. This estimate was not significantly different from the number in 2004 (2.8 million). Most initiates (56.1 percent) were younger than age 18 when they first used, and the majority of new users (56.2 percent) were female. The average age at initiation among persons aged 12 to 49 was 18.7 years.
