Use of illegal drugs and alcohol was more common among current cigarette smokers than among nonsmokers in 2006, as in 2002 through 2005. Among persons aged 12 or older, 20.4 percent of past month cigarette smokers reported current use of an illegal drug compared with 4.2 percent of persons who were not current cigarette smokers (Figure 4.7). Past month alcohol use was reported by 66.3 percent of current cigarette smokers compared with 45.8 percent of those who did not use cigarettes in the past month. The association also was found with binge drinking (43.6 percent of current cigarette users vs. 16.1 percent of current nonusers) and heavy drinking (16.0 vs. 3.8 percent, respectively).

In rare instances, methamphetamine-related psychosis and the experience of the user continuing to be delusional, will last for several years.

Among teens aged 12 to 17, the rate of binge alcohol was associated with county type. The rates of binge alcohol use were 11.5 percent in nonmetropolitan areas, 10.2 percent in small metropolitan areas, and 9.3 percent in large metropolitan areas. In completely rural counties of nonmetropolitan areas, 11.9 percent of teens reported binge drinking.

In 2008, there were 729,000 persons aged 12 or older who had used inhalants for the first time within the past 12 months; 70.4 percent were under age 18 when they first used. There was no significant difference in the number of inhalant initiates between 2007 and 2008, but the 2008 estimate was significantly below the number in 2003 (871,000), 2004 (857,000), and 2005 (877,000).
