Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
There are five main ways that drugs can be detected in a user: urine, blood, hair, saliva, and sweat. Testing the individual?s urine is generally the most common method that is used, likely because it is less expensive and intrusive than taking blood.
Adults who first used drugs at a younger age are more likely to be classified with dependence on or abuse of drugs than adults who initiated use at a later age. Among those who first tried marijuana at age 14 or younger, 11.8 percent were classified with dependence on or abuse of an illegal drug in the past year compared with only 2.1 percent of adults who had first used marijuana at age 18 or older. This pattern of higher rates of dependence or abuse among persons initiating their use of marijuana at younger ages was observed by demographic subgroups, as well as separately for rates of dependence and rates of abuse. A similar pattern was observed for age at first use of alcohol and dependence on or abuse of alcohol among adults.
Chronic users who inject crystal methamphetamine risk scarred or collapsed veins, infections of the heart, abscesses, pneumonia, and tuberculosis.
As a percentage of those aged 12 to 17 who had not used marijuana prior to the past year, the youth marijuana initiation rate in 2008 (5.6 percent) was similar to the rate in 2007 (5.2 percent).
The number of past year initiates of methamphetamine among persons aged 12 or older was 157,000 in 2007. This estimate was significantly lower than the estimate in 2002 (299,000), 2003 (260,000), 2004 (318,000), and 2006 (259,000).
Among teens aged 12 to 17 who were both smokers and heavy drinkers in the past month in 2005, 70.9 percent used illegal drugs in the past month, higher than the 3.5 percent among teens who did not drink or smoke in the past month.
