Often, an individual will begin taking Dilaudid for a legitimate ailment, go to their doctor and receive a prescription for the potent drug. As time passes they build a tolerance to the drug and have to take more and more; they then become dependent on the Dilaudid, even when they no longer need it for pain. This dependency is often what leads many down the treacherous path to Dilaudid addiction.
OxyContin is often used to alleviate or prevent the onset of opiate withdrawal by street users of heroin and methadone.
In 2008, about 10.1 million persons aged 12 to 20 (26.4 percent of this age group) reported drinking alcohol in the past month. Approximately 6.6 million (17.4 percent) were binge drinkers, and 2.1 million (5.5 percent) were heavy drinkers. The rates for current and binge alcohol use are lower than they were in 2007, when they were 27.9 and 18.6 percent, respectively.
Most (59.1 percent) of the 2.1 million recent marijuana initiates were younger than age 18 when they first used. Among teens aged 12 to 17, an estimated 4.5 percent had used marijuana for the first time within the past year, which was lower than the rate in 2004 (5.0 percent), but this difference was not statistically significant.
As in prior years, boys were more likely than girls among persons aged 12 or older to be current illegal drug users in 2006 (10.5 vs. 6.2 percent, respectively).
