In 2005, an estimated 2.9 million persons aged 12 or older used an illegal drug for the first time within the past 12 months; this averages to nearly 8,000 initiates per day. This estimate was not significantly different from the number in 2004 (2.8 million). Most initiates (56.1 percent) were younger than age 18 when they first used, and the majority of new users (56.2 percent) were female. The average age at initiation among persons aged 12 to 49 was 18.7 years.

In 2008, 30 million adults (13.4 percent of the population 18 years or older) received mental health services during the past 12 months. This was similar to the rate in 2007 (13.2 percent).

Heroin addicts who choose to be treated with methadone detox are not making any real progress in terms of addiction recovery; having to take a drug everyday or be dope sick--it is just another form of addiction.

Long-term residential drug rehab has been known to have the most successful results in terms of drug addiction recovery. Professional care at an inpatient residential rehab program is provided 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Drug rehab treatment in a residential community consists of counselors and other individuals that are recovering from similar substance abuse problems who are attending the same program. This type of intensive drug rehabilitation program typically lasts several months.

Among unemployed adults aged 18 or older in 2007, 18.3 percent were current illegal drug users, which was higher than the 8.4 percent of those employed full time and 10.1 percent of those employed part time.
