About 1.6 million adults (0.7 percent of the population 18 years or older) received inpatient care for mental health problems during the past year. This was significantly lower than the rate of inpatient treatment in 2005 (1.0 percent, or 2.1 million adults). Declines were particularly prominent among women (1.1 percent in 2005 vs. 0.7 percent in 2006), persons living in the South (1.3 vs. 0.7 percent), persons with a family income of less than $20,000 (2.7 vs. 1.9 percent), and persons receiving government assistance (3.3 vs. 2.2 percent).
In 2004, 4.4 million persons had used alcohol for the first time within the past 12 months. The number of alcohol initiates increased from 3.9 million in 2002 and 4.1 million in 2003. Most (86.9 percent) of the 4.4 million recent alcohol initiates in 2004 were younger than age 21 at the time of initiation.
The Drug Abuse Warning Network* lists opiates (heroin/morphine) among the four most frequently mentioned drugs reported in drug-related death cases in 2002.
In the South, current illegal drug use declined from 9.3 percent in 2007 to 8.0 percent in 2008 among teens aged 12 to 17, and use of crack decreased from 0.3 to 0.2 percent among persons aged 12 or older. Also in the South, current nonmedical use of prescription psychotherapeutics declined from 3.0 to 2.4 percent among persons aged 12 or older, from 3.8 to 2.8 percent among teens aged 12 to 17, and from 2.3 to 1.7 percent among adults aged 26 or older.
