When cocaine is abused recreationally it is not often taken by mouth. Toxic reactions, including death, have occurred in people who swallow the drug to avoid police detection or border authorities. This smuggling attempt is known as body packing.
Among teens, different age groups engaged in the use of different types of illegal drugs in the past month. Among 12 or 13 year olds, 1.7 percent used prescription-type drugs nonmedically, 1.5 percent used inhalants, and 0.9 percent used marijuana. There were no significant changes in the rates of current use for any drugs among persons aged 18 to 22 who were not full time college students.
