Young adults aged 18 to 22 enrolled full time in college were more likely than their peers not enrolled full time (i.e., part-time college students and persons not currently enrolled in college) to use alcohol in the past month, binge drink, and drink heavily. Past month alcohol use was reported by 66.4 percent of full-time college students compared with 54.1 percent of persons aged 18 to 22 who were not enrolled full time. Binge and heavy use rates for college students were 45.5 and 19.0 percent, respectively, compared with 38.4 and 13.3 percent, respectively, for 18 to 22 year olds not enrolled full time in college.
Samples of Ambien that were purchased on the Internet have been found to contain haloperidol (Haldol), which is a potent antipsychotic drug which has many dangerous side effects.
Rates of current use of illegal drugs were higher for young adults aged 18 to 25 (20.1 percent) than for teens aged 12 to 17 and adults aged 26 or older, with 16.6 percent using marijuana, 6.3 percent using prescription-type drugs nonmedically, 2.6 percent using cocaine, and 1.5 percent using hallucinogens.
In 2006, more than half of the 2.5 million persons aged 12 or older who received specialty substance use treatment in the past year also received treatment at a self-help group (1.5 million persons). In addition, among those who received specialty substance use treatment, 377,000 received treatment at a prison or jail and 369,000 received treatment at an emergency room. The number who received treatment at a private doctor's office in 2006 was higher than the number in 2005 (422,000 vs. 254,000, respectively).
Among underage drinkers who did not pay for the alcohol the last time they drank, the most common source was an unrelated person aged 21 or older (37.4 percent). Other underage persons provided the alcohol on the last occasion 21.1 percent of the time. Parents, guardians, or other adult family members provided the alcohol 21.0 percent of the time. Other sources of alcohol for underage drinkers included (a) took the alcohol from home (5.8 percent), (b) took it from someone else's home (3.2 percent), and (c) got it some other way (6.9 percent).
More than 1 in 10 Americans aged 12 or older in 2001 (25.1 million persons) drove under the influence of alcohol at least once in the 12 months prior to the interview. Between 2000 and 2001, the rate of driving under the influence of alcohol increased from 10.0 to 11.1 percent. Among young adults aged 18 to 25 years, 22.8 percent drove under the influence of alcohol.
