Interesting Facts and Statistics:

Prescription drug abuse has become an endemic in the United States within the past several years. It seems that there is a pill that is available for whatever ails you. Unfortunately, a large number of those pills are prescribed are highly addictive. Because the abuse of prescription drugs is so prevalent throughout the United States, there are more prescription drug rehab programs than ever before.

Nitrates are primarily abused because individuals may believe that they enhance sexual pleasure and performance.

The national prevalence rate for the use of cocaine in the past year among all persons aged 12 or older was 2.5 percent. Because cocaine is one of the substances included in the "any illegal drug other than marijuana" category, it is useful to compare the rankings of States with respect to these two substance measures. In 2002.2003, only five of the States ranked in the highest fifth for past month use of an illegal drug other than marijuana (aged 12 or older) also had past year rates of cocaine use (aged 12 or older) that were in the highest fifth. Colorado had the highest rate of past year cocaine use (3.9 percent) among persons aged 12 or older; the District of Columbia had the highest rate (3.7 percent) among those aged 26 or older; Rhode Island had the highest rate (12.1 percent) among those aged 18 to 25; and Arizona had the highest rate (3.2 percent) among teens aged 12 to 17 (Table B.7). Arizona and Colorado were the only States that ranked in the top fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older).

Young adults aged 18 to 22 enrolled full time in college were more likely than their peers not enrolled full time (this category includes part-time college students and persons not enrolled in college) to report all three levels of drinking in 2001. Past month alcohol use was reported by 63.1 percent of full-time college students compared with 53.3 percent of their counterparts who were not currently enrolled full time. Binge and heavy use rates for college students were 42.5 and 18.2 percent, respectively, compared with 37.7 and 12.1 percent, respectively, for other persons aged 18 to 22.

Among teens aged 12 to 17 in 2005, the rate of current illegal drug use was highest among American Indians or Alaska Natives, about twice the overall rate among teens (19.2 vs. 9.9 percent, respectively). The rates for other groups were 11.0 percent among blacks, 10.1 percent among whites, 9.7 percent among those reporting two or more races, 9.4 percent among Hispanics, and 3.3 percent among Asians.

In 2008, an estimated 15.0 percent of past year marijuana users aged 12 or older used marijuana on 300 or more days within the past 12 months. This translates into 3.9 million persons using marijuana on a daily or almost daily basis over a 12-month period. An estimated 35.7 percent (5.4 million) of past month marijuana users aged 12 or older used the drug on 20 or more days in the past month.
