There were no statistically significant changes between 2005 and 2006 in the rate of current illegal drug use for any racial/ethnic subgroup among persons aged 12 or older or among teens aged 12 to 17. Among young adults aged 18 to 25 who reported two or more races, the rate of current illegal drug use decreased from 31.8 percent in 2005 to 22.4 percent in 2006. In that 18-to-25-year age group, 28.5 percent of American Indians or Alaska Natives, 22.7 percent of whites, 17.3 percent of blacks, 13.9 percent of Hispanics, and 9.0 percent of Asians were current illegal drug users in 2006.

Between 2000 and 2001, the rate of illegal drug or alcohol dependence or abuse increased among boys aged 12 or older (from 8.9 to 10.0 percent) and among girls aged 12 or older (from 4.2 to 4.9 percent).

Common additives to cocaine are sugars, such as mannitol, lactose, or glucose, or even sugar substitutes, and local anesthetics such as tetracaine, procaine, and lidocaine. Quinine, talc, and cornstarch have also been used to cut cocaine.

In 2005, there were 2.4 million current cocaine users aged 12 or older, which is more than in 2004 when the number was 2.0 million. However, the change in the rate of current use of cocaine between 2005 and 2004 (1.0 and 0.8 percent, respectively) was not statistically significant.

The percentage of persons aged 12 or older needing but not receiving treatment for alcohol problems (7.2 percent) in 2002.2003 was almost 3 times larger than the corresponding percentage for persons with illegal drug problems (2.7 percent) (Tables B.19 and B.20).
