Physical drug addiction takes place when the user comes to a place where they need a drug in order to be able to function normally. If the drug is not taken, unpleasant and sometimes painful withdrawal symptoms will begin to occur. The only way to avoid these uncomfortable symptoms is to take more of the drug.
In 2008, an estimated 22.2 million persons (8.9 percent of the population aged 12 or older) were classified with substance dependence or abuse in the past year based on criteria specified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV). Of these, 3.1 million were classified with dependence on or abuse of both alcohol and illegal drugs, 3.9 million were dependent on or abused illegal drugs but not alcohol, and 15.2 million were dependent on or abused alcohol but not illegal drugs.
Much research that has been conducted regarding substance abuse has indicated that long-term drug addiction causes significant changes in brain function that persist long after the individual stops using drugs.
