Of the 20.8 million people in 2008 who were classified as needing substance use treatment but did not receive treatment at a specialty facility in the past year, 1.0 million persons (4.8 percent) reported that they felt they needed treatment for their illegal drug or alcohol use problem. Of these 1.0 million persons who felt they needed treatment, 233,000 (23.3 percent) reported that they made an effort to get treatment, and 766,000 (76.7 percent) reported making no effort to get treatment.

There were no significant changes in past month use of any drugs among young adults aged 18 to 25 between 2005 and 2006. The rate of past year use increased for Ecstasy (from 3.1 to 3.8 percent) and decreased for inhalants (2.1 to 1.8 percent).

GHB was widely available in the U.S. in health food stores, until the substance became banned in the United States. Many false claims were made in order to promote GHB such as stating that using the substance could help build muscles, burn fat and improve sex.

Although there is a high correlation between State prevalence rates for past month alcohol use and binge use of alcohol, only six States in the top fifth for use of alcohol among persons aged 12 or older also were in the top fifth for binge alcohol use.
