Chemists developed Methadone, which not only worked, but its effects lasted a lot longer than the opium that it was developed to replace.
The rate of illegal drug use in metropolitan areas was higher than the rate in nonmetropolitan counties. Rates were 7.6 percent in large metropolitan counties, 7.1 percent in small metropolitan counties, and 5.8 percent in nonmetropolitan counties. Completely rural nonmetropolitan counties had lower rates of illegal drug use than other types of nonmetropolitan counties. Rates were 4.8 percent in completely rural counties and 5.5 percent in less urbanized nonmetropolitan counties.
In 2005, the current use of a tobacco product among persons aged 12 or older was reported by a higher percentage of boys (35.8 percent) than girls (23.4 percent). Boys also had higher rates of past month use than girls of each specific tobacco product: cigarette smoking (27.4 percent of boys vs. 22.5 percent of girls), cigar smoking (9.6 vs. 1.8 percent), and use of smokeless tobacco (6.1 vs. 0.4 percent).
