The rate of current illegal drug use in the combined 2007-2008 data was lower for pregnant women than for nonpregnant women among those aged 18 to 25 (7.1 vs. 16.2 percent, respectively) and among those aged 26 to 44 (3.0 vs. 6.7 percent). Among women aged 15 to 17, however, those who were pregnant had a higher rate of use than those who were not pregnant (21.6 vs. 12.9 percent).

The most profound side effects that have been reported that are related to using large overdoses include seizures, rhabdomyolysis, renal failure, and rarely death.

This is the first year in which past year use of marijuana has been estimated at the State level. The State rankings for past year use are very similar to those for past month use. An estimated 10.8 percent of the national population aged 12 or older had used marijuana in the past year. Tennessee had the lowest rate (7.4 percent) of past year use of marijuana among persons aged 12 or older. Alaska had the highest rate of past year marijuana use among persons aged 12 or older (16.7 percent). The States with the highest rates of past year marijuana use were mostly in the West (five States) and the Northeast (four States).

The pattern of higher rates of current alcohol use, binge alcohol use, and heavy alcohol use among full-time college students than the rates for others aged 18 to 22 has remained consistent since 2002 .

For the large majority of drug users, physical detoxification and rehab treatment in a sober, supportive environment allows them to finally enter into long term recovery and embark upon a lifetime of sobriety.

Dependent drug abuse occurs when a person becomes addicted to a drug after prolonged or heavy use over time. The individual will feel a craving and they will have to take the drug consistently in order to feel normal, or to avoid uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms.
