Elk Grove, California

Introduction to Elk Grove, California

The California city of Elk Grove is located in Sacramento County, only 15 miles south of the state capital of Sacramento. California State Highway 99 runs through the city, which is also close to Interstate I-5. The Sacramento International Airport, less than a 30-minute drive away, provides carrier service via major airlines and rail transportation is also available in Sacramento.

Founded in 1850 as a stage and hotel stop, Elk Grove soon became a hub for local commerce largely due to its proximity to historic Sutter’s Fort. Evolving with a growth pattern distinct from that of its northern neighbor Sacramento, the city quietly expanded outward into adjoining countrywide areas until the late 20th century. Reliant on agriculture throughout most of its history, Elk Grove today retains its farms, vineyards, and livestock industries; but has more recently supplemented these with a burgeoning prominence of high-tech, professional service, commercial and retail enterprises.

Interesting Facts and Statistics:

Most habitual heroin users are incapable of concentration, learning, or clear thought.

In 2006, 38.9 percent of teens aged 12 to 17 with past year MDE received treatment for depression (saw or talked to a medical doctor or other professional or used prescription medication). Among teens with past year MDE, 23.9 percent saw or talked to a medical doctor or other professional only, 2.1 percent used prescription medication only, and 12.7 percent received treatment from both sources for depression in the past year.

In 2008, 4.0 million persons aged 12 or older (1.6 percent of the population) received treatment for a problem related to the use of alcohol or illegal drugs. Of these, 1.3 million received treatment for the use of both alcohol and illegal drugs, 0.8 million received treatment for the use of illegal drugs but not alcohol, and 1.6 million received treatment for the use of alcohol but not illegal drugs. (Note that estimates by substance do not sum to the total number of persons receiving treatment because the total includes persons who reported receiving treatment but did not report for which substance the treatment was received.)

The most recent studies that were related to chronic meth abuse have additionally revealed severe structural changes in areas of the brain that are associated with emotion and memory; this may account for many of the cognitive problems that are commonly observed in chronic meth users.

Crystal methamphetamine use is increasingly becoming more popular as a club drug throughout the United States and has recently become a more serious threat, especially in the major metropolitan cities.

In 2008, the number of persons aged 12 or older needing treatment for an alcohol use problem was 19.0 million (7.6 percent of the population aged 12 or older). Of these, 1.6 million (0.6 percent of the total population and 8.2 percent of the people who needed treatment for an alcohol use problem) received alcohol use treatment at a specialty facility. Thus, there were 17.4 million people who needed but did not receive treatment at a specialty facility for an alcohol use problem. None of these estimates changed significantly between 2007 and 2008 and between 2002 and 2008.
