All drugs that are abused either directly or indirectly target the brain's reward system by flooding the circuit with dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is known to be present in regions of the brain that regulate movement, emotion, cognition, motivation, and feelings of pleasure. The overstimulation of this system of the brain, which rewards our natural behaviors, will produce the euphoric effects that are sought by people who abuse drugs and teach these individuals to repeat the behavior.

Rates and patterns of drug use show substantial variation by age. For example, 3.8 percent of teens aged 12 or 13 reported current illegal drug use in 2001.
