Past year illegal drug use in 2008 was higher among adults aged 18 or older with past year SMI (30.3 percent) than among adults without SMI (12.9 percent). Similarly, the rate of past year cigarette use was higher among adults with SMI (50.5 percent) than among adults without SMI (28.5 percent).
An estimated 8.6 million people aged 12 or older (3.4 percent) were current users of illegal drugs other than marijuana in 2008.
