Rates of binge alcohol use in 2008 were 1.5 percent among 12 or 13 year olds, 6.9 percent among 14 or 15 year olds, 17.2 percent among 16 or 17 year olds, 33.7 percent among persons aged 18 to 20, and peaked among those aged 21 to 25 at 46.0 percent. The 2008 binge drinking rate for 16 or 17 year olds showed a decrease from 2007, when it was 19.4 percent.
The rate of current illegal drug use in metropolitan areas was higher than the rate in nonmetropolitan areas in 2006. The rates were 8.7 percent in large metropolitan counties, 8.3 percent in small metropolitan counties, and 6.8 percent in nonmetropolitan counties as a group. Within nonmetropolitan areas, counties that were urbanized had a rate of 7.1 percent, less urbanized counties had a rate of 6.5 percent, while completely rural counties had a rate of 7.8 percent. The rates in 2005 were similar to those in 2006.
Often these heroin users are under the misconception that if they do not inject the drug they will not become addicted. Those who have entered rehab to recover from heroin addiction include every method of heroin user. Annual admissions to substance abuse treatment for primary heroin abuse increased from 228,000 in 1995 to 254,000 in 2005; however, the proportion of primary heroin admissions remained steady at about 14 to 15 percent of all admissions. Between 1995 and 2005, inhalation and injection accounted for at least 94 percent of annual primary heroin admissions.
Based on 2005 2008 combined data, the five most often reported reasons for not receiving illegal drug or alcohol use treatment among persons aged 12 or older who needed but did not receive treatment at a specialty facility and perceived a need for treatment included (a) not ready to stop using (38.8 percent), (b) no health coverage and could not afford cost (32.1 percent), (c) possible negative effect on job (12.3 percent), (d) not knowing where to go for treatment (12.0 percent), and (e) concern that receiving treatment might cause neighbors/community to have negative opinion (11.8 percent).
