Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
Often these heroin users are under the misconception that if they do not inject the drug they will not become addicted. Those who have entered rehab to recover from heroin addiction include every method of heroin user. Annual admissions to substance abuse treatment for primary heroin abuse increased from 228,000 in 1995 to 254,000 in 2005; however, the proportion of primary heroin admissions remained steady at about 14 to 15 percent of all admissions. Between 1995 and 2005, inhalation and injection accounted for at least 94 percent of annual primary heroin admissions.
An estimated 1.1 million Americans used Ecstasy for the first time in 2009, which is a significant increase from the 894,000 first-time users reported in 2008.
560,000 people used heroin last year.
Just as we turn down the volume on a radio that is too loud, the brain adjusts to the overwhelming surges in dopamine by producing less of the substance or by reducing the number of receptors that can receive and transmit signals. When this process takes place, the impact of dopamine on the reward circuit of a drug abusers brain will eventually become abnormally low, and the ability to experience any pleasure will be greatly reduced. This is why the drug abuser eventually feels flat and depressed, and is often unable to enjoy things that previously brought them pleasure. Now, they need to take the drugs in order to just bring their dopamine function back up to normal levels. And, they must take larger and larger amounts of the drug than they first did to create this dopamine high in the brain - an effect known as tolerance.
Flashbacks do occur with the use of LSD and have been reported to consist of fleeting perceptions of colors and shapes that occur long after usage of the drug has stopped. This effect could possibly be due to brain damage and may be permanent and irreversible.
Rates of past month illegal drug use varied with age.
