Heroin facts about withdrawal cover a wide range of symptoms that occur after stopping or dramatically lowering ones heroin use. Heroin withdrawal is caused by physical dependence. This means that a person relies on heroin to prevent symptoms of withdrawal. Over time, greater amounts of heroin become necessary to produce the same effect. The time it takes to become physically dependent varies with each individual.

The percentage of teens aged 12 to 17 reporting that it would be easy to obtain cocaine declined from 25.9 percent in 2006 to 24.5 percent in 2007. In addition, the perceived availability decreased between 2002 and 2007 for marijuana (from 55.0 to 49.1 percent), heroin (from 15.8 to 14.1 percent), and LSD (from 19.4 to 14.4 percent).

Among the estimated 4.0 million adults on probation at some time in the past year, 24.4 percent reported current illegal drug use in 2001, which was comparable with the rate observed in 2000 (24.2 percent). This compares with a rate of 6.3 percent among adults not on probation in 2001.

Heroin withdrawal can produce effects such as drug craving, restlessness, muscle and bone pain, and vomiting.

The rate of past month alcohol use increased with increasing levels of education. Among adults aged 18 or older with less than a high school education, 33.4 percent were current drinkers in 2001, while 65.2 percent of college graduates were current drinkers. However, binge drinking and heavy drinking were least prevalent among college graduates.
