The exact medical causes of drug and alcohol addiction cannot yet be completely understood. Researchers in the field of substance abuse can only state with assurance that the repeated use of addictive drugs can bring about dramatic changes in both the structure and the function of the brain in destructive ways that can result in compulsive drug use.

By the mid-nineties heroin purity was generally 40 percent or higher. In the Northeast, heroin purity averaged between 60 and 75 percent.
