Pharmacists have the ability to play a key role in preventing prescription drug abuse and addiction by making it a point to provide clear information and advice about how to take a medication appropriately, about the effects the medication may have, and about any possible drug interactions. Pharmacists can help to curtail the incidents of prescription fraud or diversion by keeping a keen eye out for false or altered prescription forms. Many pharmacies have developed "hotlines" to alert other drug stores that are in the same region when a fraud has been detected.

Because of methadone?s synthetic structure ( it is a man made chemical), the pharmacological effects of this medication are longer lasting than those of other opiate drugs, allowing for once-daily administration in pain management and opiate treatment programs such as methadone clinics.
