Huntington Beach, California

Introduction to Huntington Beach, California

Awarded the trademark to the title "Surf City, USA" by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 2006, Huntington Beach was incorporated in 1909. It is the 16th largest city in California. Home to approximately 200,000 inhabitants, Huntington Beach falls within the combined Los Angeles metropolitan area, which has a population of about 17 million. The city is located on the Pacific Ocean in Southern California, 38 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

Huntington Beach is located on a mesa beside the Pacific Ocean within view of the Santa Ana River. Before the Spaniards arrived, the Gabrielino Indians maintained a large camp and burial ground on this mesa. From 1901 to 1904, real estate developers, trying to create an ocean side resort, invested heavily in rail, electricity, and telephone infrastructure. For The Huntington Beach Company, the resort failed to take off. However their fortunes were reversed with the exploitation of an oil reserve below their land. From 1919 through the 1950's the oil business thrived.

Huntington Beach falls within Orange County, which in 2004 was named one of the "Top 25 Cities for Doing Business in America" by Inc. Magazine in the Large Cities category.

The average daily high temperature during August is 84 degrees Fahrenheit while the average daily low is 64. For January the average daily highs and lows are 69 and 47 degrees Fahrenheit.
