LSD stands for lysergic acid diethylamide and it is the drug that is most commonly identified with the term "hallucinogen".
The rates of current use of cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, cigars, and pipe tobacco were unchanged between 2004 and 2005 among persons aged 12 or older. However, between 2002 and 2005, past month use of a tobacco product declined from 30.4 to 29.4 percent, and past month cigarette use decreased from 26.0 to 24.9 percent.
With snorting cocaine, the usual ritual is to place a line of coke, about 0.3 cm wide by 2.5 cm long, on a smooth surface. The finely divided powder is then snorted (inhaled quickly) into a nostril through a plastic or glass straw or a rolled currency bill. This ritual is usually repeated within a few minutes using the other nostril.
The average annual incidence of marijuana in 2002 (averaged over the most recent 2 years and expressed as a percentage or rate per 100 person years of exposure) for all persons aged 12 or older was highest for Alaska (2.8). The top fifth was comprised mostly of States from the West (five) and from the Northeast (four). Eight States ranked in the top fifth for marijuana incidence in the 12 or older age group also ranked in the top fifth for current marijuana use (Alaska, Colorado, District of Columbia, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont). In 2008, the number of persons aged 12 or older needing treatment for an illegal drug use problem was 7.6 million (3.0 percent of the total population). Of these, 1.2 million (0.5 percent of the total population and 16.0 percent of the persons who needed treatment) received treatment at a specialty facility for an illegal drug use problem in the past year. Thus, there were 6.4 million persons (2.5 percent of the total population) who needed but did not receive treatment at a specialty facility for an illegal drug use problem in 2008. None of these estimates changed significantly between 2007 and 2008. The percentage of persons needing treatment for an illegal drug use problem decreased between 2002 (3.3 percent) and 2008 (3.0 percent).
