The profile of the typical Ecstasy user has changed recently, with Ecstasy now affecting a broader range of ethnic groups.

Rates of past month illegal drug use varied with age. Through the adolescent years from 12 to 17, the rates of current illegal drug use increased from 3.9 percent at ages 12 or 13 to 9.1 percent at ages 14 or 15 to 16.0 percent at ages 16 or 17. The highest rate was among persons aged 18 to 20 (22.2 percent). The rate was 18.3 percent among those aged 21 to 25 and declined with increasing age among adults aged 26 or older.

Ecstasy users report feeling effects within 30?60 minutes of consumption, hitting a peak at approximately 1?1.5 hours, reaching a plateau that lasts about 2?3 hours, followed by a comedown of a few hours, which may be accompanied by fatigue and minor effects.

Early effects of LSD can often include muscle weakness, muscle twitching and impaired coordination. Later effects may include distortion of senses and confusion in time and thought processes.

Teens aged 12 to 17 who believed their parents would strongly disapprove of their using a particular substance were less likely to use that substance than were teens who believed their parents would somewhat disapprove or neither approve nor disapprove. For example, in 2006, past month cigarette use was reported by 7.4 percent of teens who perceived strong parental disapproval of their smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day compared with 42.1 percent of teens who believed their parents would not strongly disapprove. Current marijuana use also was much less prevalent among teens who perceived strong parental disapproval for trying marijuana or hashish once or twice than among those who did not (4.6 vs. 26.5 percent, respectively).
