Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
States in the Northeast (Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont) and the West (Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington) had the lowest rates of perceived great risk of using marijuana occasionally (once a month) among persons aged 12 or older. Only about 27 percent of all persons aged 12 or older in Washington thought that occasional use was a great risk (Table B.4). Eight of the States having the lowest perceived risks also had rates in the highest fifth for past month marijuana use for persons aged 12 or older. Similarly, of the 10 States indicating the highest perceived risk of occasional marijuana use among persons aged 12 or older, five had past month marijuana use rates that were in the lowest fifth (Alabama, Georgia, Iowa, Mississippi, and Texas).
There was a significant increase in methamphetamine use among full-time college students aged 18 to 22 from 0.2 percent in 2004 to 0.5 percent in 2005. The rate was unchanged among other persons in that age group (1.0 percent in 2004 vs. 0.8 percent in 2005).
In 2006, the use of smokeless tobacco in the past month was reported by 4.5 percent of persons aged 18 or older who had not completed high school, 4.1 percent of those who completed high school but did not attend college, and 3.4 percent of those who attended some college. The prevalence among college graduates, 2.1 percent, was lower than among the other groups.
In 2008, rates of current alcohol use were 3.4 percent among persons aged 12 or 13, 13.1 percent of persons aged 14 or 15, 26.2 percent of 16 or 17 year olds, 48.7 percent of those aged 18 to 20, and 69.5 percent of 21 to 25 year olds. These estimates showed significant declines from 2007 for the 14 or 15 year olds (from 14.7 to 13.1 percent) and for the 16 or 17 year olds (from 29.0 to 26.2 percent).
Other chemicals or substances are often added to, or substituted for, MDMA in ecstasy tablets, such as caffeine, dextromethorphan (in some cough syrups), amphetamines, or cocaine.
Bath salts contain a derivative that is very similar to the active ingredients in methamphetamines; this may explain why the side effects that are related to bath salt are reported to be so similar to those that are linked to those involving meth use.
