Not everyone who uses drugs or alcohol becomes addicted to them, but substance abuse can cause problems for individuals whether they are technically addicted or not. There are different levels of substance abuse, and all of them can be on some level, very dangerous.
The proportion of high-school seniors who have used cocaine at least once in their lifetimes has increased from 5.9 percent in 1994 to 8.7 percent in 1997.
Among older age groups, the prevalence of current alcohol use decreased with increasing age, from 67.4 percent among 26 to 29 year olds to 50.3 percent among 60 to 64 year olds and 39.7 percent among people aged 65 or older.
No one knows how many times a person can use ecstasy before becoming addicted or who's most vulnerable to ecstasy addiction. Genetic makeup, living environment, and other factors probably play a role in a person's susceptibility to addiction to any drug.
