One of the most important things that should be confronted in addiction recovery treatment addressing is the often misguided beliefs that an individual may hold onto about self, others and their environment.

The percentage disapproving of peers' substance use generally decreased with age. In 2005, disapproval of peers using marijuana once a month or more, for example, was reported by 92.0 percent of teens aged 12 or 13, 81.6 percent of those aged 14 or 15, and 70.9 percent of those aged 16 or 17.

Opiates like OxyContin are highly effective for treating pain, but when a person starts taking opiates when they are not in pain, and in doses beyond what is required to treat their pain, addiction is highly likely.

Among pregnant women aged 15 to 44, an estimated 10.6 percent reported current alcohol use, 4.5 percent reported binge drinking, and 0.8 percent reported heavy drinking. These rates were significantly lower than the rates for nonpregnant women in the same age group (54.0, 24.2, and 5.5 percent, respectively). Binge drinking during the first trimester of pregnancy was reported by 10.3 percent of pregnant women aged 15 to 44. All of these estimates by pregnancy status are based on data averaged over 2007 and 2008. The 2007 2008 estimate for first trimester binge drinking is higher than in 2005 2006, when it was 4.6 percent.

The rate of binge alcohol use was lowest among Asians (12.7 percent). Rates for other racial/ethnic groups were 20.3 percent for blacks, 20.8 percent for persons reporting two or more races, 23.4 percent for whites, 23.7 percent for Hispanics, 25.7 percent for Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders, and 32.8 percent for American Indians or Alaska Natives.

Studies of brain function have shown that the effects of acute doses of Ecstasy extend to regions of the brain that are thought to be involved in higher thought processes. These findings have raised concern about possible long-term effects on both infrequent and regular users of Ecstasy.
