The average age of cocaine initiates rose from 17.2 years in 1967 to 23.8 years in 1991 and subsequently declined to approximately 20 years from 1997 to 2000.

A majority of teens aged 12 to 17 reported that they disapprove of their peers using substances. In 2005, 88.2 percent of teens "strongly" or "somewhat" disapproved of their peers smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day; 80.8 percent reported similar feelings about their peers trying marijuana or hashish once or twice; and 85.6 percent strongly or somewhat disapproved of peers having one or two drinks of an alcoholic beverage nearly every day. These rates are similar to those observed in 2004.

Past year methamphetamine use was higher in the West (1.6 percent) than in the Northeast (0.3 percent), Midwest (0.5 percent) or South (0.7 percent) in 2006. The rates of past year use in 2006 were similar to those in 2002 in each region.

The number of individuals in the U.S. that have reported abusing sedatives such as Xanax, has increase by more than 50% since 1998 in the United States.

Between 2000 and 2001, the frequency of marijuana use among past year users was similar. This translates to 2.5 million persons using marijuana on a daily or almost daily basis over a 12-month period. The longest case of sedation that was reported concerning bath salts was 12 days; when the individual no longer sedated, the psychosis returned in full force.
