The average age of cocaine initiates rose from 17.2 years in 1967 to 23.8 years in 1991 and subsequently declined to approximately 20 years from 1997 to 2000.

In 2005, 88.2 percent of teens "strongly" or "somewhat" disapproved of their peers smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day; 80.8 percent reported similar feelings about their peers trying marijuana or hashish once or twice; and 85.6 percent strongly or somewhat disapproved of peers having one or two drinks of an alcoholic beverage nearly every day.
