There was no significant change in the number of past year initiates of Ecstasy between 2007 (781,000) and 2008 (894,000). The number of past year Ecstasy initiates in 2008, however, was significantly higher than the estimates in 2003 (642,000), 2004 (607,000), and 2005 (615,000). The estimate had been 1.2 million in 2002, significantly higher than in 2008. Most (68.5 percent) of the recent Ecstasy initiates in 2008 were aged 18 or older at the time they first used Ecstasy. Among past year initiates aged 12 to 49, the average age at initiation of Ecstasy in 2008 was 20.3 years, similar to the average age in 2007 (20.2 years).

Past month cigarette use was lower among teens who had talked with their parents (9.4 percent) than among those who had not (11.8 percent), and past month binge drinking was lower among teens who had talked with their parents (9.3 percent) than among those who had not (11.8 percent).
