Among the 4.6 million adults on probation at some time in the past year, 31.9 percent reported current illegal drug use in 2006. This was higher than the rate of 7.6 percent among adults not on probation in 2006.
In 2005, there were 4.3 million persons aged 12 or older who had used alcohol for the first time within the past 12 months; this averages to approximately 12,000 initiates per day.
