Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
The percentage of the population using illegal drugs increased from 6.3 percent in 1999 and 2000 to 7.1 percent in 2001. Between 2000 and 2001, statistically significant increases were noted for the current use of marijuana (4.8 to 5.4 percent), cocaine (0.5 to 0.7 percent), pain relievers (1.2 to 1.6 percent), and tranquilizers (0.4 to 0.6 percent). A change in NHSDA questions on hallucinogens caused the estimated rate of use of this category of drugs to increase from 0.4 to 0.6 percent between 2000 and 2001.
In 2005, heavy drinking was reported by 6.6 percent of the population aged 12 or older, or 16 million people. This percentage is similar to the rates of heavy drinking in 2002 (6.7 percent), 2003 (6.8 percent), and 2004 (6.9 percent).
The national prevalence rate for the use of cocaine in the past year among all persons aged 12 or older was 2.5 percent. Because cocaine is one of the substances included in the "any illegal drug other than marijuana" category, it is useful to compare the rankings of States with respect to these two substance measures. In 2002.2003, only five of the States ranked in the highest fifth for past month use of an illegal drug other than marijuana (aged 12 or older) also had past year rates of cocaine use (aged 12 or older) that were in the highest fifth. Colorado had the highest rate of past year cocaine use (3.9 percent) among persons aged 12 or older; the District of Columbia had the highest rate (3.7 percent) among those aged 26 or older; Rhode Island had the highest rate (12.1 percent) among those aged 18 to 25; and Arizona had the highest rate (3.2 percent) among teens aged 12 to 17. Arizona and Colorado were the only States that ranked in the top fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older).
Ecstasy use can result in a feeling of euphoria, a sense of intimacy with others, and diminished anxiety.
A person who develops a Methadone addiction feels that they can't function the day without the substance, which is one of the primary hallmarks of any drug dependence.
In 2006, the average age at first marijuana use among recent initiates aged 12 to 49 was 17.4 years, the same as the average in 2005. Among recent initiates aged 12 or older who initiated use prior to the age of 21, the mean ages at first use were 15.9 years in 2002, 15.9 years in 2003, 16.0 years in 2004, 16.0 years in 2005, and 16.1 years in 2006.
