Did You Know? ... Interesting Facts and Statistics:
Marijuana can be smoked in blunts, which are cigars that have been emptied of tobacco and refilled with a mixture of marijuana and tobacco.
The national prevalence rate for the use of cocaine in the past year among all persons aged 12 or older was 2.5 percent (Table A.6). Because cocaine is one of the substances included in the "any illegal drug other than marijuana" category, it is useful to compare the rankings of States with respect to these two substance measures. In 2002, only five of the States with the 10 highest rates of past month use of an illegal drug other than marijuana (aged 12 or older) also had past year rates of cocaine use (aged 12 or older) that were in the top fifth. The District of Columbia had the highest rate of past year cocaine use both among persons aged 12 or older and those aged 26 or older, but it was in the lowest fifth for those aged 12 to 17 and for those aged 18 to 25. Colorado was the only State that ranked in the top fifth for all three age groups (12 to 17, 18 to 25, and 26 or older).
In 2002.2003, 44 percent of those who were determined to be dependent on or abusing alcohol in the past year were estimated to be dependent on alcohol in the past year (Tables B.14 and B.15). State estimates for alcohol dependence for persons aged 12 or older ranged from 2.7 percent in Tennessee to 4.8 percent in the District of Columbia (Table B.15). Six of the States in the top fifth for dependence on or abuse of alcohol also could be found in the top fifth for dependence on alcohol for persons aged 12 or older. The highest rates for alcohol dependence occurred in the 18 to 25 age group, with Rhode Island having the highest rate (10.7 percent) (Table B.15).
Heroin effects include slowed and slurred speech, slow gait, constricted pupils, droopy eyelids, impaired night vision, vomiting, constipation.
In 2006, 1.7 percent of 12 or 13 year olds, 9.1 percent of 14 or 15 year olds, and 19.9 percent of 16 or 17 year olds were current cigarette smokers. The percentage of past month cigarette smokers among 12 or 13 year olds was lower in 2006 than in 2005 (1.7 vs. 2.4 percent). Across age groups, current cigarette use peaked at 40.2 percent among young adults aged 21 to 25. Less than a quarter (22.5 percent) of persons in the 35 or older age group in 2006 smoked cigarettes in the past month.
Chronic heroin users who inject the drug are at risk of developing scarred or collapsed veins, infection of the heart lining and valves, abscesses, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and liver and kidney disease.
