Methadone has been used extensively to reduce cravings for heroin and other dangerous narcotics; however, many professionals see this procedure as more of an opiate switch. The bottom line is that the individual is still dependent on a drug.
One of the most common methods of illegal heroin use is via intravenous injection (colloquially termed "shooting up"). Recreational users may also administer the drug by snorting, or smoking by inhaling its vapors when heated, i.e. "chasing the dragon."
Methamphetamine users have been known to indulge in "binge" injecting, in which they inject large amounts of the drug ever couple of hours until they run out of it or become too disorganized to continue using.
